In the beginning

This is a beginning. Not a beginning in the sense of creatio ex nihilo, but rather an emergence where the old still largely evidences itself in the new. It’s an ending that shifts into a beginning. In this way, it may be a transition of utility à la creatio ex materia; or perhaps, a more significant sort of transcendence of a creatio ex deo kind. In either case, my sense of this beginning is like that moment an artist seizes hold of new inspiration and begins to paint — a faith-like leap toward the unknown.

Among other categorizations of human activity, I am a designer, a design educator, and a doctorate student theorizing design while immersed in the open design of my own learning process. I am intrigued by the creative act (design), the process of growth and change (learning), the connections that exist between everything (networks), and the small worlds within the world at large (systems). These various disciplines of inquiry and practice have emerged over time to form a perspective of life, the universe and everything (to borrow Douglas Adam’s pithy phrase), which I have in mind to make a long-term project of exploration, discovery, invention and application.

While I’m not at all clear about a possible thesis, boundary conditions, or research heuristics, my plan is to use this blog as a place to work out my thinking over the course of my doctoral studies and perhaps beyond.
